RUTH CALLANDER HOUSE RENOVATIONS

Despite the busy summer of vacations the Callander House restoration has progressed.  The architect completed his plans for the required handicapped access changes, negotiations with two

State Committees (Historic and ADA requirements) and one Town Building Inspector were completed and per-mission to hire a contractor granted.  A ramp to the back screened porch from the parking lot including two entry doors - one to the porch and the other into the house - will be built first.  Building is slated to begin the first week of October.  Plumbers are also being hired to plumb the handi-capped bathroom, which we hope will be worked on at the same time.  Both of these constructions are required before a certificate of occupancy can be issued.

In the interior of the house, Pat Crowther has refinished a large handsome section of paneling which was stored in  the attic and is rein-stalling it in its original site framing a 1700s stone fire-place on one side of the center chimney.

The Senior Squad - George Wilson,

Chris Sullivan, and the Frisbies - has removed wallpaper, painted ceilings, trim, closets and walls, and restored   the floors of two of the upstairs rooms, which are now ready for use.

Walter Dower has built shelves for a triangle-shaped closet.

The Squad will accept applicants, aged 50 to 85.

The Betty Keser Scott Garden has been a triumph of  design and color all summer, tended by Portland Garden Club mem-bers.  It has been a beautiful accent to the property.  It’s visible from Main Street.  Drive in and admire it.

2002 Calendar

Bob McDougall, with the research help of Doris Sherrow and the photo-graphic services of Walter Olsen has completed the 2002 calendar.  Now it is about to go the printer.  We expect it to be available for our booth at the Portland Fair the weekend of October 12 to 14.  The calendar will focus on the charge of the Main Street Com-mittee showing lower Main Street over time.

v    Among his other talents add craftsman.  Bob McDougall has built an attractive base for the glass-faced bookcase given to us by Ruth and Allen Grover.  It adds considerably to the beauty and the storage space in our research room.

MUSEUM ROOM REMOVAL

Marie Keser and Vivian Dower have computerized and packed up more than one-half of the artifacts in the museum room at the library for removal to the Callander House.  The room held a surprising number of items and the met-iculous recording and packing requires great patience and care.
